The Perks Of Being a Freelance Copywriter in Manchester

copywriter in manchester

One of the perks of being a freelancer is that you can do your job from wherever you feel most comfortable and happy. Location is everything when it comes to happiness and mood, so it makes sense to put down roots in a place that makes you feel energised and productive.

While some will use this freedom to become location independent, there are downsides to the digital nomad lifestyle.

Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve always thought the name ‘Digital Nomates’ would be more appropriate. I would much rather extend my holiday to enjoy a little extra time in a new destination, rather than give up my home base entirely.

So, when you have a choice about where to settle down, how do you choose? I’d like to make a case for Manchester. As a Manchester copywriter, I’m a big fan of the city. These are just some of the things I love about being a freelance copywriter in Manchester.

No shortage of coworking spaces

When the other occupants of your home are getting on your last nerve and the dining table chairs have completely knackered your back, it’s time to go in search of a co-working space.

There’s no shortage of places to work in Manchester, including dedicated co-working offices to freelancer friendly coffee shops. Even the Central Library will welcome you with open arms and decent WiFi.

My favourite spots include:

  • WeWork (Grab a monthly membership and enjoy barista-made coffee and beer on tap along with a varied events calendar.)
  • Withington Works (My favourite budget coworking space set in the stunning Withington Baths, also offers discounted gym membership.)
  • Colony (Too fancy for my taste, but they have hosted some great events)
  • Central Library (My favourite free spot to work, head into the central reading room for a tranquil spot to get your head down.)
  • Idle Hands Coffee (The best coffee and the best pie in town, nuff said.)
  • Smoak Coffee (My favourite haunt in South Manchester, grab a flat white and watch the world go by. Also a great lunch spot for their salt beef bagels.)

Cheap and cheerful lunch spots

You’re going to build up an appetite after a day spent building your business and connecting with clients. Thankfully, there’s no shortage of variety in Manchester City Centre. Skip the meal deals and discover some local legends like This and That, Yadgar, Katsouris Deli, Pho Cue, Bundobust, Nell’s Pizza and Listo Burrito.

After work entertainment

You won’t be bored in Manchester. It offers a vibrant cultural scene with something for everyone. Fancy a pint or a cocktail? Head to Henry Cs, Three Little Words, The Castle Hotel, North Westward Ho or Behind Closed Doors. If it’s live music you’re looking for, my favourite haunts would be Albert Hall, Gullivers, YES, Gorilla, or Night and Day Cafe. For cinema, head to HOME, The Light Stockport, or Cultplex.

Strong freelancing community

My focus for 2025 is on finding my community. While I love the independence of working for myself, I do miss the support that comes from having co-workers. It’s also essential for career development to have something you can benchmark yourself against.

Thankfully, I’m learning that Manchester has a strong freelancing community, with plenty of events to explore.

  • Although not specifically for freelancers, female business owners might benefit from the networking opportunities offered by The Trouble Club. They have recently started offering a Manchester-based events calendar.
  • Copywriters Unite often hold events in the city centre, offering the chance to get together with a like minded bunch of copy nerds.
  • Process Events invites creatives to share their creative process and take questions from the crowd.
  • Doodledo regularly hosts breakfast networking events for freelancers and creatives – move quick as they always sell out.

Have I missed any regular events? I’d love to hear about them and to add them to this list! Drop me an email to see your Manchester freelancer events listed here.
